What is amigurumi?

Amigurumi is the Japanese technique of making small cute animals or creatures that are either knitted or crocheted. The word amigurumi comes from the Japanese words ami (crocheted or knitted) and nuigurumi (stuffed doll).

Amigurumi can come in all shapes and colours. The only limit is your imagination! They are usually crocheted using Worsted or Light Worsted (Double Knit) yarn using a smaller hook than recommended to create a tight fabric that the stuffing does not show through. The body is usually crocheted in a spiral using single crochet (UK Double crochet).

The parts of the body are stuffed and sewn together at the end to make the character. Facial features are sewn on using yarn or embroidery thread. Eyes can be made by embroidering them, using felt or safety eyes.

Amigurumi is so much fun to make and you will soon have lots of your own little friends to keep you company!
