Getting Started

Crochet is so much fun and is easy to do once you have learnt the basic stitches. Crochet is a very portable craft as all you need is a ball of yarn and a hook.

Yarn ranges from sock weight to bulky. Light Worsted (Double Knit) or Worsted (Aran) are usually used for amigurumi.

Using a hook 2-3 sizes smaller than is usually recommended for the yarn you have chosen makes a dense fabric that the stuffing will not show through. It also gives the finished toy more structure.

For example the recommended hook size for Light Worsted (DK) is 4mm, but to crochet amigurumi I use a 3.5mm hook  in my patterns.

Hook sizes have different names with Milimeter, UK and US sizing used. This is a handy conversion chart to make sure you have the correct size for the pattern you are using.
